Tip #1 of 4 for May Mentoring

Tip #1: Be present and pay attention
With the school year ending next month, in-school mentoring programs like Be the One will be off for the summer. Which means that if you are currently mentoring a student, you only have a handful of opportunities left to meet together. As mentors, it’s important that we make the most of our remaining time with our students. At this point in the year, students tend to want to just coast to the finish line and get their summer started (especially as the weather improves). But, we as mentors can do our best to help them finish strong by choosing to finish strong ourselves. Now is not the time to “check-out” on your student! If anything, now is the time to focus on finishing the school year strong together. To help you do that, we will be focusing on mentoring tips for the end of the school year in this month’s Mentoring Minute.

Tip #1: Be present and pay attention

Distractions will only increase for both of you at the end of the school year. But, you can help maximize the time you have left with your student by not bringing your own distractions with you. Leave your phone in the car, put your watch in your pocket, and give your student one solid hour of your focused, undivided attention.
