Learning & Laughing over Chess
One of my newest mentors happens to be a chess master and has been teaching his
mentee how to play. It’s been so fun to watch this student take on a brand-new skill—and he
even beat his mentor once! The mentor joked that he must be getting rusty and may need to
brush up on his skills to keep up with his mentee’s quickly emerging talent.

The Perfect Gift
Another mentor brought what turned out to be the perfect gift for her mentee this week. Her
sophomore mentee is incredibly creative and loves to sing, dance, and make art. Picking up
on that right away, the mentor brought small canvases and quality markers. The student
jumped right in and began creating as soon as they sat down together.

An Unexpected Thank you
This month has been a strange one. The major flooding caused three days off school and
with Winter Break coming up we are only in school 12 days this month. Students were
understandably out of sorts, and there was a lot of arranging and rearranging to make sure mentoring pairs could connect before the break. In the midst of all of that craziness, I was
pleasantly surprised by one of our students. She brought me flowers to express her
gratitude for Be the One—and for me. This moment was especially meaningful, as she has a
lot of challenges and has rarely, if ever, expressed gratitude before this school year.
