Strengthening Communities Through Mentoring: one relationship at a time

Lynden Middle School – December 2025

Mentor Coordinator Report

Stories & Quotes To Share:
2v2”

Mentorship is often considered a 1-on-1 activity. However, the Be the One program here at LMS has developed a little community in the school where a lot of mentees speak to each other about their mentors and fun things they do together. Matches recommend each other games, have brought treats and snacks to share and even done crafts together. The mentees have built a community where there is a lot of talk about mentoring and supporting each other. As wholesome as our LMS family is, it is known that siblings must engage in competition every so often. Two matches had to settle who was the better at a game called “Duuuuude.” So they set aside 20 minutes of their time to determine who was the best. Despite my best efforts, I was never able to tell who won.

“Presents”

Mentors and mentees love giving each other presents during the run up to the winter break. This allows me to remind mentors that you shouldn’t spoil your mentees with gifts and that the focus of every meeting is to talk and hang out together. However, in the spirit of the season, presents and gifts are allowed as long as they are not to big or expensive. Books, small gift cards and card games were a few of the gifts given this year. One of the more memorable gifts was a book on how to be better at chess with a note encouraging the mentee to practice over the break. Another was a small hat that a mentor had knitted for the student. The exchange of presents and “see you next year” jokes is a staple activity of the last week of Be the One LMS.
