Mentoring Benefits Mentors, Too

When I asked one of our newer mentors about her experience with Be the One so far, she shared something unexpected. She said that the New Mentor Orientation training, along with the time spent with her mentee, has helped her become a better mom to her own pre-teens.

She explained that mentoring has made her more intentional about spending quality, face-to-face time with her own children. Seeing the impact of mentorship on her student has reinforced the importance of that connection in her own family.

Mentoring doesn’t just benefit the mentee—it enriches the mentor, their families, and the entire community!

Ongoing Training: A Key Benefit of Mentoring with Be the One

After attending Mike Black’s ‘Keeping Students Afloat’ Mentor Equipping session, I asked a mentor what resonated most with her. She found much of his training relevant to her mentoring experience, but one phrase stood out in particular:

“It’s hard to play chess in a hurricane.”

Mike used this analogy to describe the challenges students face as they try to navigate school, social interactions, and life while dealing with past and present trauma. This insight deeply impacted the mentor, reinforcing the importance of providing stability and support to students through mentorship.
