Strengthening Communities Through Mentoring: one relationship at a time

Noocksack Valley High School – May

Mentor Coordinator Report

Stories & Quotes To Share:
One mentor is instrumental in helping her mentee build confidence in areas where she feels insecure, particularly with voicing her thoughts. For instance, expressing herself clearly to her friends. Historically, if they did something truly hurtful, she would often remain silent and move past it.

However, the mentor is teaching her how to articulate her emotions better. Consequently, she’s cultivated significantly closer, more authentic friendships. She feels she genuinely knows how to be real now.

Highlights:
The final school bell brought a mix of emotions, for our high school mentoring program. The end of the school year culminates many months of shared growth, all built one-on-one within each mentoring pair. It is imporant to celebrate the wrap-up of the school year before summer break, giving each mentor and student a personal moment to reflect on their journey.

For our final meeting, we kept the focus on those individual connections, just as we did all year.
Each mentoring pair found a quiet spot, settling in for their last session. We had special snacks to share waiting for each duo, and a personal Italian soda bar was set up for them. I watched as mentors and students, often with quiet conversation, prepared their colorful drinks. It was a comfortable, familiar setting, allowing them to connect in their usual, impactful way.

More than the food or the fun, the heart of these meetings was the chance for each mentoring pair to thank each other for a year of mentoring. It truly showed the value of what each pair had built together.
