Strengthening Communities Through Mentoring: one relationship at a time

Lynden Middle School – Aprl 2025

Mentor Coordinator Report

Stories & Quotes To Share:

Test Time
State testing is coming up next month and a lot of students are starting to feel the
pressure. Each match takes on the tests differently. One match spent some time
studying together by having the mentee teach the mentor about the class. Another
match spent time going over different test taking strategies and tips that the mentor
developed over her teaching career. The mentors have been really helpful with the
preparation and building up the students for the big test.

Sharing Spring Break Memories

After spring break wrapped up, everyone was eager to catch up and show off their vacation pics! It’s actually pretty cool to see how excited both the students and our amazing adult mentors are to share their stories. Honestly, it’s interesting to note how the adults are just as eager to share their memories of spring break as the kids are! It just goes to show how much they value being part of each other’s lives. It creates this really warm and connected vibe, which is exactly what we’re all about.

The Crossover Catastrophe

As the weather begins to warm up and summer vacation looms, the Be the One matches at Lynden Middle School have begun to catch spring fever. Lucky for them, the middle school has a lot of outside areas and activities for mentors and mentees to use! A lot of the matches have begun going outside to walk or play sports with each other. However, the outside world can be dangerous, as one match found out early this month.

The match, who have asked to remain unnamed for this story, were outside playing basketball together. The mentee had the ball and proceeded to cross over the mentor so hard that the mentor fell to the ground. An embarrassing moment for the mentor to be sure. However, in a moment of solidarity, the mentee went to lay up the ball right after the mentor fell and proceeded to throw the ball into the bottom of the rim. This resulted in the ball flying back directly into the mentee’s face. This left both laid out on the ground laughing, an excellent example of mentees following in their mentors’ footsteps.

Highlights:
April was the last month of making active matches here at LMS. I tried to finish off my waitlist and was able to match 3 more students before the deadline for new matches expired.

Once the deadline passed, I did classroom visits to help build out the waitlist for the start of next year. I am now suffering from success, as a huge influx of interest from the students has now ballooned my waitlist to its largest number of the year.

I am in need of a more female mentors, AGAIN. As 11 out of the 12 new students interested are girls.

Upcoming:
• 30 current matches
• 4 students on the waitlist
• 10 Students with Permission Slips out
• New Matches Closed for the Year

Number of Current Matches: 30
