Strengthening Communities Through Mentoring: one relationship at a time

Lynden High School – May

Mentor Coordinator Report

Stories & Quotes To Share:

A few of our favorite things:

I love listening to student interviews in May and hearing the wonderful things they have to say about their mentors.  Students talk about doing better in school, improved mental health, how mentors help with specific life problems, and why they look up to their mentors as role models.  I love sharing these positive comments with the mentors so they know they make a difference

Comments such as these show that mentoring pays off.

Student Quotes:

  • “Last year I was going through a lot of family stuff, and you were with me the whole time to listen and cheer me up”
  • “Thanks for teaching me how to carry myself as a man, and not be childish”

Mentor Quotes:

  • “This was really touching, and reminds me why I do this.
  • “Cue the tears and get me the Kleenex!”

 I’m sorry for your loss.

This spring I had a couple of mentees who lost family members.  One student and her mentor went to the greenhouse together during our spring plant sale and picked out a hanging basket together.  The mentor purchased it for her student’s family in memory of the grandmother who recently passed away.  What a touching gesture of kindness!  Another mentor has been spending time throughout the year listening to family stories of a loved one lost and helping the student focus on cherished memories.  The student thanked the mentor for helping her remember that her grandma is always with her.

 Racing the Old Man:

One of my junior boys is quite athletic and spends a lot of time in the weight room bulking up.  He had been challenging his mentor to a race around the track for several weeks and claiming that he could beat him no problem; throwing in a bit of bravado and good-natured teasing of his mentor as “being an old man.”  One day the mentor showed up to their meeting with a large bag and said they needed to get out to the track and race.  When the student asked about the bag, he said it contained his running shoes.  When they reached the track, the mentor brought out two remote control cars to race.  He thought it would be his only chance to win!  They had a great time laughing.
