Strengthening Communities Through Mentoring: one relationship at a time

Lynden High School – March 2026

Mentor Coordinator Report

Stories to Share:

“You’ve come a long way!”  This week I had a chance to talk with a long-time match about the changes that have taken place during the time they have known each other.  This young man struggled significantly in middle school with academics, attendance, and behavior.  Without a father-figure at home, and a mom spread thin by caring for several children, he seemed to be floundering.  When offered a mentor his freshman year, he decided to take the opportunity, and slowly started building trust and sharing some of the things on his mind.  Change happened slowly, but steadily.  In time, he began to care more about school; showing up and actually passing classes.  He engaged in learning and extra-curricular activities, and for the first time started really thinking about the future and post-high school programs.  Life isn’t perfect, but he has a strong advocate and support in his corner.  Now approaching graduation, he is taking steps to attend BTC or another technical college.  For the first time, he believes he can succeed.

“Carry On!”  This month had a few blips for me as I had back surgery and had to miss 2 weeks of school to recover.  I was lucky to have a great sub fill in for me and keep mentor meetings rolling along. She did a great job, mentors kept showing up, students were supported, and things went well overall.  I’m thankful for everyone who helped out and showed grace in my absence.
