Making good choices

This past week, I had a mentoring update from one of my pairs who meets off campus due to Running Start Classes. The mentor wrote: “Yesterday, we met and were chatting about how much she has matured since freshman year. It was fun to watch her talk about how she used to be, and she credits her good choices to the mentoring program. She said she would have gone down a darker path if she had not had someone to talk to and process life with. SUCCESS story!” This young lady started out as a troubled freshman with little motivation for school. Now she is taking college classes, works part-time, and will graduate in June with her AA. She’s ready to move on to college out of state and study nursing.

I feel so special! Most students meet their mentors during an elective class, but sometimes we can’t find a good time and matches end up meeting during lunchtime instead. (You can tell how important the relationship is when a student gives up their social time with friends because they want to see their mentor.) When one of my matches moved to lunch time, the mentor offered to make and bring lunch. She took the time to find out about her mentee’s preferences and brings a prepared lunch each week with several items and a beverage. While checking in on their meetings, I commented on the gourmet lunches. The student said: “I know, I feel so special!”
