Challenging doesn’t even begin to describe Sky’s life experience: loss upon loss, instability and difficult family relationships, poor decisions, growing up too fast, becoming a teen parent, and academic struggles which could crush the hope out of just about anyone.
At times, Sky worked hard, attended school regularly, and felt optimistic, but when depression hit he wanted to slink into his cave. Over 3 years, Jason stuck around and encouraged him to face another day ultimately encouraging Sky to shift into a work training program to gain skills and on-the-job experience.
Sky sums up Jason’s influence this way: “He listens, cares, and helps me kick some bad habits. He’s the one person in life I trust with my secrets. He’s better than a father figure. He’s my best friend.”

It really takes many individuals and a community to support kids, families and schools, and I love connecting the critical dots. Every child can benefit from a caring adult mentor”
