Strengthening Communities Through Mentoring: one relationship at a time

Nooksack Valley High School – April 2026

Mentor Coordinator Report

Stories & Quotes To Share:

Hilarious and REAL

I popped in to check on one of our mentor/mentee pairs and walked right into a moment of pure silliness—the mentee had just burped and they were both cracking up. Of course, I couldn’t help but laugh too. That little moment turned into the mentor sharing a story about winning a belching contest when she was a freshman in high school. She went up against a senior quarterback… and won! It was such a ridiculous, unexpected conversation, but also one of those reminders that connection often deepens in the silliest moments of a relationship!

Not Enough Time to Share it All

This week, when I asked how things were going with her student, a mentor smiled and shared something that really moved me. She said that over the course of the week between their meetings, her student had so much she wanted to talk about that she actually wrote it all down ahead of time—in the form of a letter to her mentor—so she wouldn’t forget anything. She told her, “I just had so many things to tell you about, and I wanted to make sure I remembered them all.” There’s something so special about that kind of eagerness and trust. It’s a beautiful picture of a relationship where a student feels safe and excited to share their life. And it is definitely a sign of a strong and flourishing mentoring match!
