Aim and Game
The year-end field trip to Aim and Game went off without a hitch. The trip is becoming a staple for the students in the program, and it is always one of the highlights of the year. No matter how many times we go, I am always amazed by how the mentors and mentees embrace every activity, from throwing axes to battling it out with Nerf guns. Knowing that middle schoolers and fun are always an exciting combination, I am happy to report that everyone had a great time. Despite the many attractions, video games and battles, many of the matches were content to sit and talk with each other. Bringing the matches outside of the school and giving them the opportunity to engage in new activities is a great way to close out the year.
Parting gifts
The last week of May is also the last week of Be the One meetings for the school year. In preparation for the summer vacation and three months in-between meetings, mentors and mentees alike brought gifts to each other. There is a rule for mentors to not buy expensive gifts for their mentees, usually I tell them to keep it under 20 dollars. Apparently, I need to start telling this rule to mentees as well. Three mentees came into their last meeting with huge gift boxes for their mentors. A few mentees brought homemade crafts and gifts. One student gave his mentor a woodshop project that he made. Through all the hugs, tears, gifts and happy goodbyes, the impact of the matches can be seen on the faces of every mentor and mentee in the program.
