Steve first met his mentor in middle school. At the time, he hadn’t been here very long and was working to learn English. He struggled with his grades and didn’t have much confidence to speak with others. His mentor knew what it was like to move from another country and encouraged Steve to stick with it and keep working hard. His mentor helped him catch up on a few assignments and he started doing better. Two years later, their relationship has grown deeper, and Steve says he can talk to his mentor about anything and feel understood. “He helped me to have confidence to talk with my teachers and ask for help. He is one of the few people I can really count on in my life.”
